  1. I know what ya mean. Embarassing.. I've heard of Barberton but don't know where it is... Good luck on the Les Paul.
  2. Do I see a USB cable on that hamster wheel? Hey, maybe you could power your computer that way! Seriously... I bet if you do a bit of looking, you could find somebody with a bandsaw near you.
  3. Good point. I guess they should have made it right immediately or else told you if there would be a delay due to unexpected circumstances or...
  4. Thanks guys. I feel like a rookie, forgetting the search engine! I shall not uselessly clutter a board again.
  5. Your work is beautiful! Keep rockin'!
  6. I don't think you should give the name. The fact that they told you to return it for a replacement means they want to do business the right way. It's quite possible for a company to mess up one order and send out thousands of flawless orders.
  7. If you wire it straight to the output jack, I think you'd get a bit more brightness in the sound. Even when the pot is set at "10", it creates resistance between the lead and ground wires, which allows some treble to bleed through to ground (so I have read. ).
  8. Cool. What kind of top is on the guitar with white humbuckers? It's really pretty.
  9. To drill a hole, you need a solid piece to drill into. For instance, a forstner bit has to have wood to grab onto in the center of the bit or else it's going to kick. Mm, that explains some problems I've encountered.
  10. I am making a set of P-90s. I know on a humbucker, you connect start to start and finish to finish, and have opposite magnetic polarity for each coil. Should these pickups be the same way to get hum cancellation with both pickups selected? (This will be ultra-simple wiring w/Gibson style switch). My feeling is, yes. But I just want to get some input. Thanks.
  11. That's a very original body shape. I like it. It would be really cool if you did one with an angled set neck, 3x3 tuners, rather than Fender-style necks. But those axes are awesome!
  12. Or filled with dowel and then re-drilled. Regardless, they cannot be drilled as is. Is the finish an issue? I don't see why drilling would be a problem. But, I know very little.
  13. Are you sure you want a really thick guitar? I find that the smaller a guitar is, the more comfortable it is to play. You gotta remember too... have you ever played a Les Paul sitting down w/out strap (i.e. at music store)... of course... it wants to slide off your leg! Part of that might be the weight and thickness of the body. But if you like that, go with it.
  14. Yeah... don't count on it for "scoring chicks".
  15. If you chamber it, you can make it thicker without it getting so heavy. If you stick to tried-and-true dimensions (maybe Les Paul thickness, since it's one of your inspirations) you'll probably end up with a good guitar.
  16. It doesnt quite work like that - 90% couldnt give a crap and will think you are strange when you could have just brought a nice shiny new one!! Funny... I've always generated interest with my projects. People always think it's cool, even though my work isn't professional quality. Aside from anything else, let me say this... you should learn to use a hand plane just FOR ITS OWN SAKE. It is one of the most exhilerating things you'll ever do. Just learn how to set it up and use it. Start with the blade set super-fine. It isn't hard. Personally, if I my project had been going for 6 months, I'd let it drag on for another year if it would mean a fantastic finished product. No one's paying you to build it; it's a hobby, for your own enjoyment; you want a top-notch guitar so that your improving playing skills aren't bogged down. You shouldn't be discouraged from all this. You should take it in stride and learn from it. I had a professor who said something like "education is painful because it involves tearing down your old mindset and replacing it with a better one." This applies to things way beyond guitar building.
  17. I've done okay so far using an electric hand drill as a winder. I've bought the Stew mac magnets and also the Allparts magnets. I think the Allparts magnet is bigger. I can't say any more about one being better or worse.
  18. Dude, that guitar is beautiful. Keep up the good work.
  19. If you can build a guitar, you can definitely build an amp. It's mostly electronics knowledge, which you can pick up with some reading etc....
  20. I don't have a vise, so I just clamp the nut blank down with a C-clamp. There is usually some extra length in the blank, and that part goes under the clamp. I swing the blank away from the work bench so the file can go at an angle when necessary. It's not difficult at all, though you need to be careful getting the slots to the right depth. I do this with the strings on, as recommended by Melvyn Hyscock. Make sure the action is set as low as possible when you cut the slots; otherwise you may mistake high action for a high string slot, and take the slot too low. I did this.
  21. Good point. The base definitely roughs up the wood. It's not an issue on a carved top, but could be on a flat top. Or you could just allow for a lot of sanding after cutting out the body.
  22. It looks beautiful dude. Fantastic. I don't know if you need to make a new neck. You could probably make it fit well with some veneer.
  23. I use a jigsaw. It works okay, although it requires a lot of clean up. If you're on a budget, I don't see why a jigsaw couldn't do an adequate job. "I'm currently debating whether or not to do a belly contour (any opinions on this is more than welcome). I'm also considering making my own compensated nut. " I recommend the belly contour. Anything that makes the guitar more comfortable to play is good, in my opinion. As to the compensated nut... I suggest you save that for another project and make a "standard" nut for your first. Of course, if you're careful, I'm sure you could do a great job of it. Me personally, I would be worried about attempting that. Just my 2 cents.
