yeah I didnt even think about finish, I thought you ment as far as woodworking..
yeah I have to grainfill it.. no biggy.
-
the swamp ash Im using is almost white, and is VERY easy to work with..
the mahogony,Zebra, and maple Im using was much more of a pain.
-
to me its either alder or ash.
and I ment thats what it looks like, and what he could use to get that.
I doubt its swamp ash like mine..
Ive never seen maple with grain lines like that.
then again ive never seen people use standard maple for a body. I bet its bright as hell.
-
ash wil give that look..
heres mine with swamp ash, unfinished

padauk
pa-duke
cool stuff.. whole board cost me $10 from http://www.northwestlumberco.com/
they ship within the states.. but they are 20 mins from my work.
the mahogony body blanks are 45 for that large piece and they have almost every exotic wood Id look for..
excluding quilted maple and swamp ash
but the flamed maple they have there is the piece I was using for the neck, if you look on the first pages of this thread you can see it.

+1 on long bit from the neck pocket,
as far as stew mac goes.
I got the hot rod and the bit they sell for it, im building a few guitars and I can honestly say that it made it alot easyer.
-
I agree, the red is fitting.

2 Texan's
ones with swamp ash and maple "pickguard" while the second will be mahogony and a zebra wood "pickguard"
Im still using ebony for the neck of the swamp ash one, but I was going to use zebra for the mahogony, after it came out so nice I didnt want to screw it up like that..
im thinking just rosewood..
-
yeah, for two of the same body style, different materials though.
-
swamp ash or white ash?
-
I laminated the pieces:
and I dont know if I want to basdardize the awesomeness that these necks are with the zebra wood..
the two together...
mahogony body

whats happening is hes getting out bid, and instead of just bidding his max, hes bidding in incroments because he doesnt understand how ebay works yet.
look at the times hes bidding not the order.
he got outbid, then tried to outbid sherman, but shermans max price was higher so it didnt effect the timeline. Then he bid again two more times till finaly he beat sherman at 310
then sherman came back and bid again setting his max at 350
cohrstrom then bid 3 more times. untill he beat shermans price at whatever, he bid higher then 355 but you have it set to $5 bid incoments.
see on ebay, theres two ways to do it. One you set your highest price, say $355 and walk away. But people get bid happy and go to "win" over getting a good deal.
the second is to put your max bid in at the last possible second, leaving only you as the highest bidder, and not letting the other bidders see that youve bid in time for them to outbid you. this is called "sniping".
Id make sure to get his paypal info, and ONLY ship to a confirmed address. You are not covered by the sellers protection policy if you ship to a unconfirmed address.
Or you can accept money order or check, and only ship when they clear.
doesnt look like a bad bidder, just a newb.

I dont really see a difference, the laminate is to switch the grains up.. you could make some cool lams verticaly..
-
I like it!
Id like to see a PS mock or whatever with a neck on it though..
-
Im planning on cutting the boards and alternating the grain.. we'll see..
thanks a bunch for the info!
-
arrg... oh noes..
I cant tell if thats the saw or grain, as the lines are raised.. ill sand it and look again later.
-
P.S. Is that Mahogany plain/flat sawn or rift? Paduak looks flat sawn, but the Mahogany doesn't.
No Idea, most of the stuff there is flat sawn, they do have specificly quarter sawn Mahogony, but it was in the rough. besides asking them(witch its to late today) how can I tell?
-
yeah im sorry, flat sawn and plain sawn are used the same on a few places..
Im not really worried if its not that big of an issue..
and yeah If its possible Id still like to keep it one piece, but the idea of a lam is growing on me..
-
ahh zebrano?
yeah, Ive got enough to resaw and get a fingerboard and another inset pickguard.
its going to be the same body style as this one.. but with a bit of a backing story..

Recently I had made a maple neck to thin and decided to cut bait and start over instead of wishing the whole time it was thicker.
hard to do becuase I was into it both time and money but I think the end result will be much better.
So I went back to my local hardwood store and was just going to grab another flamed maple piece. But while there I was just in awe of the color of some Paduk boards they had so for $10 I grabed a 1" x 6" x 3' piece and took it home.
I had allready purchased a Mahogony neck for another project
and then I started to worry a bit.
Both of these boards are plain sawn and Ive read a bit about it having a possibilty of warping under tension.
I've also read that the truss rod should be able to cope.
Im wondering if I should maybe cut a lamitate from the mahogony neck, and put it in the middle of the Paduk, while reversing the grain in the different pieces..
I then could do the same with the mahogony, witch in the end would look pretty nice.
wondering what everyones opinions here were.

just as a easy way to double check, take a ruler or yard stick that has the hole drilled into it, measure 12" off and on a piece of paper draw a line.. cut the edges and just use it to eye it..
-
theres the neck now, its a 16th thin at the nut, over a 3/16 at the 12 and even worse at the 24th..
replacement wood
I might laminate it with a strip of this one:
thats pieces of a new project im working on but havent made posts yet..

nah, just make sure to get contact info and maybe ask for a PN to call him..
