Speaking of sites like those I recently found another good blog.
Also, don't forget the one I mentioned before that has some Dan Erlewine vids on it.
hey! did you see we backed up your strat post? where did your website go?

this is one set of mahogany I got for a neck:
http://www.desopolis.com/guitar/neckhelp2.jpg
this is the body blank before alot of shaping:
http://www.desopolis.com/guitar/dirtysanchez.jpg
it looks alot darker in person but has those streaks in it, plus it has alot of sparkle. Not alot of white though.. the first blank actually has some flame in it, but is a different cut then the body.
both are African.

allthough more expensive then some places, stewmac constantly delivers and impresses me. the customer service from when I ordered the wrong part to the quick shipping..
the FB I got from them was super nice, but now I just get 1/4" ebony from a hardwood store and use stewmacs slotting jig to get what I want..

hahaha
my project will be called building on a budget.. luthiery without loans
-
+1 on removing the top layer and using this neck blank for another project(say, ebony fretboard?)
problem is every time YOU look at it, you'll see it.
then you'll just build another one.
-
i've never had a problem with it..
whats the third rock one? I cant remember.

I dont think it was an attack Matt,
untill 11 or so I dont think you even had a stable shape, let alone wood choices...
and I dont care untill I see the damn walnut! all that trouble and no payoff here is like trying to date a nun.
-
I just want to do it to do it..

What I plan on doing is using a small tripod and setting it on a shelf looking down on my table. I might rotate the video so it looks right, but whenever I move Im dragging the camera with me and pointing it.
im also planning on using a cheap digital recorder with a detached mic to record my voice, that way basic shop noise wont get in the way.
-
I dont think they actually read the title, they just pick a random forum number and make a thread.
-
so funny to see you guys say lunch, the post time says 10:53 PM here.. i was thrown off for a minute, then realized this is a VERY broad board.

John, I'll be doing a simmilar thing, but mainly using youtube to host my vids.
I also have a large ammount of space availible(3GB) but I think I like the exposure YT brings. and my blog/design company will use that space
I'll send you a copy of every vid I make, and also will put it on my own blog.
I'll start the tut vids in jan.

wow..
my squire strat is the best thing under 1000 ive ever played. Ive played the $400 MIM strats and at first I was on the anti-squire bandwagon and aspired for a high end fender or PRS.
then I played them...
now after buying some new hardware and electronics(witch I've worked out the "too even" issues) its one of my favorite guitars. and often, when at the shop where I take leasons people comment on not only the sound, but how I keep care of it.(hard to see the stress cracks in the laq on the back)
Now im building two guitars of my dreams, and im allready hundreds into each one, and if I were to have someone else do the work they would be $2000 guitars.
I may suggest starting with a MIM fender though because ones like the "bullet" series are pure garbage. the affinity's are cool, and mine is a standard I played a SUPER nice ash model fender the last time I was at Guitar center, but if you want to refinish it then a regular model would be fine too.
as far as the veneers go, the only thing I have to remind you of it the bevels, teles dont have the standard flat tops. you could plane it down to remove the bevels, and put a thin cap on, but a veneer wont cut it. or you could do a cool thing with the bevels being a different color.. that would be cool.

I LOOOVEE the color of padauk. my neck is a lam mainly made of padauk.
my only voice of concern is to NOT let it be in the sun, over time if left exposed the bright red will brown. I hear marine laq. may do a better protection job, but mine will spend its off time either in its case or with a neck sock.

you dont have a location written, are you stateside or somewhere else?
mainly because I really am interested in the convertable, but for some reason its not availible stateside..
witch one is it?

oscilating sander!

awesome project. love the woods used.

I really like that explorer... enough to say, that I may be building one for myself as my "rock" guitar..

I would never consider voting for myself in any kind of contest like this with people i respect. To me it just doesnt seem like the done thing!
I am not an overly competitive person and i have no wish to 'beat' anyone else here. When i won last time i was very happy and gratefull that my guitar was judged to be GOTM, and i won even though i voted for a guitar other than my own.
Quite simply put, i dont vote for my guitar out of respect and admiration for the other entries rather than a lack of believe in my instruments. If i am gonna win i am gonna win whoever i vote for!
I believe in my guitars, i love my guitars and i most certainly bust my arse on my guitars.... and i can see that everyone who entered did the same
I love your guitars, even this one.. but I liked others more..

why dont we just use image verification for sign up? that stopped alot of problems on other boards..
-
what was the first bridge? wilkinson?

I recently tried one of these, and was very happy with the results. Slightly smaller than the Grizzly's, but about half the price.

The rosewood certainly takes more work to carve, but the look and feel is great.
did you apply a finish to it? maybe oil?
I really like the Idea of a rosewood neck...
got any finished pics?

LMAO at that guy... ahh man.. good morning laugh...

Yessir, I agree. I've seen enough foolhardiness on the job, especially those jobs where the contractor is NOT getting paid by the hour. They figure the way to make money is to highball. And they try to make their employees work the same way. I saw one young guy feeding blanks into a table router, cutting molding profiles on the job site. He had to go to the hospital.
So theres a tidbit of advice for anyone who works in the construction or industrial trades. Your employer might be getting paid by contract where in turn, you are getting a crappy hourly wage from him. Don't let him push you into working faster. All it does is make him more money, you less money and the potential for carelessness and accidents. I'll bet a lot of accidents happen for that very reason.
actually, the contract is ALSO based on a standard hourly rate, and assumes a preset schedule. IF a job were to run over the contracted rate either a change order or reschedule is needed.
I guess you could PUSH the job, and finish early, but generally the price also reducts..

I use guitar pro now that all my favorite tab sites went down, there still free.(the programs cheap)
GF - I didnt mean to "copy" your work, more of back it up. We thought you disapeared and didnt want somthing you spent so much time on to vanish with you. as soon as you get your site back, if you dont have your own copy I'll send it all out to you and take the version I have down.
