hey all. Since i'm not gonna dish out hundreds-thousands for an amp head with the distortion and clean i want, i was thinking of just tweaking the sound i have. (digitech metal master). I'm told the best way to shape tone is with an EQ, but what do you look for in an EQ? should i just get any EQ. Here's one i was looking at.

i have one pedal. A digitech metal zone, and even that id give up for a nice distortion rack effect or amp head. Don't get me wrong it is a very nice pedal but i'm a tube man. I got the reverb i need on my fender.

The only pedals i would consider buying right now is an overdrive (fender deville overdrive is terrible), an octaver, digitech synth wah, and a digitech whammy, but they'd all be for fun unless i go on to play with a RATM cover band lol.

since they make it sound like if you get those frets, your chords will ring more true, i suggest just getting an earvana nut

malmsteen had one made. took a fender, got an altered pickguard, and used some undersaddle pickup. Depending on the bridge, you could get graphtech ghost saddles, i'm told they're one of the best on the market right now, of course there are others. I do know that the graphtech makes them for about any bridge: TOM, strat, tele, and i think even floyds. Check their site out and they say what guitars can take what.

or get lessons. everyone i run into is afraid of lessons because of the money issue. 20 bucks a week for one lesson isn't that much at all, especially on yourself. A lot of people, if not everyone, agrees that learing theory on piano is much more beneficial than guitar or bass.

i tried the v-twin pedal and it didn't sound anything like the rectifer does, nor for metal.

the JT-valve boy does sound very nice, but i'd have to give a try for myself.

What about the mesa boogie recto recording preamp, or is that only for recording like it says?

i play lots of metal too, but i wanted the best clean i could find, and that's why i got a deville. I am currently using a metal master pedal but am looking for other alternatives to get that mesa boogie tube sound without spending 1000 bucks (if you know of any go to http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=16713 )

the peavey xxx was nice, but i thought the clean was kinda meh

you could go for a mesa boogie f-series but, again, the clean is meh lol

feylya and BonzaiBob both suggested to me ENGL amps; "they're Mesa distortion and Fender cleans for a fraction of Mesa's price. Which is nice."

so you may wanna give them a whirl. i think in the end you're going to find PG is a lot like harmony central. Everyone has a different opinion lol

Tube amps are loud, like i said, i have a 4x10 60 watt deville. It's always kept between 1 and 2 in my house, and someday i woudl like to take it outside and just blast the sucker lol.

keep an eye out for yamahas, seriously. I have an RGX121S which cost me 450, and i've seen 6 of them go on ebay and sell for less than 150. They're pretty damn good if you ask me, and they aren't chipboard or anything like that. I'm sure there's a few yamaha basses that you could come across, even from Canada that'll be in your budget.

hey all. i'm trying to take the pickguard off my teisco to check the wireing and make sure everything is in good shape because it certainly does not sound like it is. This guitar was my uncles a few years ago and he told me his friend added a pickup in between the two single coils (S/H/S). The only problem is he didn't route it ala swimming pool style and so one of the screws is actually drilled into the wood. The other problem is, ever since i got it, the screw didn't look fresh, and sure enough, the face of it is stripped and i can't move it at all. I've tried 5 different screw drivers and vice grips but they just can't grip on to something so little.

Any advice on how to get this sucker out?

fretless V is really nice, looks like it's singed which really attracts me to it.

The impaler is awesome. this was a hard vote.

the neck through doesn't do it for me. the horns are too squared and that doesnt do it for me. don't let my opinion discourage you! lol

the gargoyle is a nice piece, but the V takes it all, with the Impaler one step behind it. I hope matt doesn't chase me with that and then have the guitar live up to its name haha.

get a deville if you want awesome clean. It even handles the lows very well (one of my guitars is tuned at C#) The overdrive is extremly muddy but there's a kit to fix that on torresengineering.com. i haven't tried it because i don't really care for overdrive. I have a 4x10 deville, 60 watts, and it is very loud when it wants to be. In my house I keep the volume between 1 and 2 and when your guitar is tunned at C#, the bass rumbles. My parents don't care though as long as no windows break lol.

You could go for a boogie combo amp, but i found the clean to suck on their F-series and their distortion to lack.

Don't even think about going with a peavey classic series. Maybe I just tried a bad amp but I tried it, then tried the deville and there was a huge difference in tone and for some reason the peavey costed more.

Fender does have a 15 watt tube amp into 8 ohms. The Fender hot rod Pro Jr. it's about 400 bucks.

How much wattage are you looking for, and you say you're in your quest for tone but what kind of music do you play?

im mixed about it. i think its a great idea when you want a lot and you're willing to pay for it and use it. However it can be a problem when you have so much going on. I don't know if their stories are true but you always hear about the guy on ebay selling his mesa boogie for no reserve because he needs the cash super fast to pay off something else.

With the loan or not, you either wait so many years to have it all, or wait so many years to pay for it all, if it takes that long. I am thinking of doing the same thing; buy myself a new computer for recording and then buy recording gear and any other gear and pay so much a month. Will you be doing that through a website like musiciansfriend.com, or will you take the loan through a bank or something like that?

i think its cause he took the shot on an angle so it kinda distorts and tricks how your eyes percieve things, however, derek's word is the only one that can break this puzzle lol.

okay, dumb question here. What is the difference between the rectifiers? I went on the site and all I could find was wattage, and the single doesn't have as many independent channels and modes. Anything else? What about the mesa boogie recto recording preamp, or is that only for recording?

well i got my clean nice and set up with a fender 4x10 deville. Currently i am using a digitech metal master but nothing beats the tube distortion for me. Someone mentioned to me earlier about building a Dr. Boogie (forget what site that's from) but i am 17 and since i have no skill in electronics, i think i want to keep the hair on my head, and my life for a bit longer lol. I don't want to spend 3000 canadian for a mesa boogie triple rectifier head when i'll only be using the distortion. I did see the Gainiac 2 tube preamp by Rocktron but i haven't found a store that carries it yet here in Toronto. I believe there's only one tube in it anyways, but still would be worth trying I think. I have tried the line 6 uber metal and it is a fantastic pedal and the next thing i'll be doing is compareing it side by side.

Any suggestions on what's out there to get that nice thick tube distortion, or given the situation, should i stick with the metal master?

i tried a squier master series telecaster the other day with duncan designed and holy crap it sounded so nice. I read a lot that squiers are made of plywood and lack quality but this one didn't sound like it or feel like it. It was mahogany chambered with a mahogany neck through (or set neck, cant remember which).

I am not a fan of EMGs and pickups designed for metal. They just don't suite me. Haven't tried bartoloni's, but have heard good reviews.
