  1. except that i never claimed to be using logic in my argument.unlike you,i have no need to "butch up" my touchy feely stuff with a false claim to logic.i am secure in my masculinity. ooohhh..SNAP!!!! OOoo... ouch... I feel co-shame for people who self-snap, especially when there was no actual burn. <cheeks start burning> Yikes... that's embarrassing for you.... But you see, you've still forgotten the point. My point was that there was NO touchy-feely stuff. You can't use your own false claim as evidence for a furthur (ad-hominem) statement--which is in turn a red herring or a straw man or both. Nah, my original point contained nothin' but pure logic. It simply spoke to your clearly fallacious contention that Satch is above criticism by anybody less famous and less talented. Tsk tsk. Even if not in THIS thread, you HAVE claimed to be logical in the past, so surely you MUST recognize this.... And I suspect you DO; hence the (completely unrelated) parting-shot rather than the admission that you probably shouldn't have tried stepping up.
  2. +1 -- any time the symptoms and cause you describe have happened to me, it's been due to one component not being sent properly to ground. It could also be a ground loop (in which case, your wiring might even "look" correct upon first visual inspection)-- but either way, I'm betting on ground. Greg
  3. Nah, the logic was completely sound. You're just applying it to the wrong thing. My logic effectively countered your implication that you need to be famous to be able to criticize. It wasn't a statement on the intelligence of the criticism of Satch's face. Despite your rhetoric (which is all it is), my logic is almost always completely linear, and completely sound. When I forward "touchy feely" crap, I forward it as my opinion, not as logic. Even your follow-up statements had some logical fallacies. I might be (and AM) "touchy feely" in my personality, but I'm also fairly unshakeable in my logic, and your rhetoric (rhetoric NOT being logic) doesn't change that. If you're interested, I can break the whole thing down for you, but I know you well enough to know that a lengthy response by me will just make you roll your eyes. It's tricky to be "touchy feely" and also enjoy following logic through... because people get pissed, and I'm sensitive to people getting pissed. <chuckle> Let's just say that you and I actually agree here, so there's no point fighting about it. I don't want to give the wrong message by picking out points that are unimportant in the grand scheme. {edited}
  4. I don't see any reason you couldn't put some wood down in there to build it up a bit. If you do an excellent and tight job (no small task)it'll couple pretty much the same as to the original body. If the job is slightly less than tight, you'll at least get as much coupling as with mounting rings. And honestly, I don't buy the "direct coupling" tone voodoo anyhow, so in my opinion adding wood in there is still a good solution to produce the aesthetic effect (the "look") that you're going for. Greg
  5. Welllll.... In the interest of "logic" (one of my unfortunate obsessions because although I rarely mean it personally, it pisses people off), someone being famous and/or prolific doesn't put them above criticism; and by the same token, NOT being famous doesn't negate someone's ability to form an opinion or generate intelligent criticism. If fame were the only metric for judging ability and worthiness, we'd be in a really crap-tastic world of dreary oppression. And again, just logic here... nothing personal... but for the very reasons you're allowed to lose your respect for Hendrix due to the nature of his death, others are allowed to continue respecting him/his music regardless of the cause of his death. And that reason is simply that we all have our own subjective value systems. Away from logic and onto personal perspective: I think Satch's SSB was about as good as you can do with such a limited scope. I mean, if he had gone all 'widdly widdly' on the thing, it might not have translated into a proper tribute to the national anthem. Hendrix's was more than a touch sarcastic... the breakdown of the song is intentional and playing the anthem was meant ironically... it doesn't serve as an exhaltation. Satch was genuinely respecting the anthem, whether the playing was impressive or not. Plus, at the end when they put the caption of what you can't hear him say, "That was cool," it pretty much sums it up. He was just like a kid. That's pretty cool, too. Greg
  6. There are dozens of pickups that will put you in the right ballpark. If you want to check out what the "big" manufacturers have to offer, just go to DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan websites and read. They have pretty good descriptions of most of their pickups. The original EVH pickup was just a PAF, no? Not even a "metal"/"rock" pickup! It's all about the fingers and the amp.
  7. Sounds like you know exactly what to do to fix it up.
  8. Active electronics will go a ways to return some clarity IF you end up with an otherwise dark-sounding bass. Even just a VMC from EMG might give you the punch back. Not that I'm saying it'll *definitely* be dark (I honestly don't know), just that IF it ends up a bit dark. Greg
  9. He's completely over-concerned with proving himself as the "good ol' boy brawler" of rock. "No More Tears" holds one of the best solos ever, though. Well. Maybe not as classic as other solos I could name, but I really like it.
  10. teh-eh-ehhhrrible. But, to each their own. ;-) Anybody remember skinnier, less fuzzy Zakk Wylde? Just slightly right of being a typical hair-rocker? When did he turn into a stereotypical redneck? No offence meant to rednecks in the original sense of the term.
  11. I'm not sure what answer you're hoping for. ;-) "How will it sound" is absolutely impossible to answer. Since you're using active pickups and a fairly "standard" set of woods, I imagine it will sound fine. It's not like there's a disaster waiting to happen with that formula or anything. Prolly gonna be heavy, depending on the body style you go with.
  12. That's some crazy-looking neck. The fingerboard wood seems WAY too thick! My first reaction was the same as Xanthus-- just raise everything. But then I kept thinking on it, and y'know? I might be tempted to fix it somehow. I like to think outside of the box a bit, and I myself would be tempted to take the wood off the neck itself. I'd have to have the whole thing in front of me to assess the feasibility, but even with a "lip" of sorts, I'm thinking that you could still pull it off. The tricky part, if you decided to take a big chance and do it that way (an unorthodox and NOT recommended way... by anyone I've ever seen... I'm just thinking aloud here...) is setting up a jig so that you remove a perfectly level amount of wood....
  13. I don't see why anybody in the world couldn't get a pre-made neckthrough from someone like Soulmate or Carvin, and produce a decent instrument. If he's already willing to pay a bit, but isn't afraid of the OTHER parts of the build, he could buy a neckthrough blank, and add his own wings, hardware, etc.
  14. THAT guitar has a $4,300 msrp?
  15. I forgot about these, but I remember the website coming up a while ago. They need to get into a major manufacturer's house for some much-needed publicity. No experience, I'm afraid-- but at least one of their guitar models is aimed at the "metal" crowd. Greg
  16. Yowch!!! And right back at'er. There's a man for ya.
  17. Link didn't work! I'm curious to see, though. Welcome to PG.
  18. I say why not? It's not quite the drastic change that many people claim (as I'm sure you know), but it IS an improvement, in my opinion. Why not improve upon a design when you have the chance? Give'er!
  19. +1 I never understood the "sustain is king" marketing ploys anyhow. Tone is king.
  20. Love'em, Quarter! MCH, brass has been used plenty for bridges and nuts. She'll work fine.
  21. Nice! Any preference for what tuning you'll be using? I've been trying C6, but it's hard to escape the Hawaiian sound with that particular tuning and I'm primarily a rock and alt-country type guy. What material did you use for the metal "bar" in the bridge and nut?
  22. Dude, that's spectacular. I'd love to see some close-ups of your customized parts-- the nut, bridge, tailpiece, and mounting rings in particular. Greg
  23. Cool features. Decent shape (for the genre)... Kinda inarticulate in the video about what makes it great, though. <shrug> I get the feeling the guitar-player guy (dunno who he is) isn't first-language English, which makes some of his phrases forgiveable, for sure. Greg
