  1. Definitely not dry rot. The grain is hard and uniform. IVe had this problem a lot with zebrawood, which is why i chose to never buy it online again. But this time i got it from a local supplier. I dont know the moisture content, but they claim its always below 8% on the stuff they carry. Really frustrating though.
  2. Punky? It doesnt seem like dry rot to me. Ive had a lot of problems with the dark grain on zebrawood cracking like that. But never this much. What is punky?
  3. So I think im going to have to scratch the zebrawood SS carved top. It cracked in so many places that its just not going to work. Its too bad, for the price i paid for that 1 piece of zebra i could have gotten 3 mahogany bodies.
  4. The clear is on! This one sprayed great. Very minimal orange peel. Should be really easy to buff out.
  5. Yeah, i dont expect it to be quite the same with oil. Its just really cool to see how it has such a high reflective property. I imagine if it was burnished it would be like glass.
  6. Got the final clear on the dragonburst. also here is a solid granadillo neck im working on. This stuff has a reflection just by planing. I cant wait to see what its like buffed and oiled.
  7. I tried using the top clear coat in the UV cure finish a few times. It was a huge pain to brush on and never leveled out enough to use well enough without a ton of heavy sanding. The brand im using says its possible to spray but its way too thick to spray out of a conventional gun.
  8. Indeed! It always has some really cool figure along with the huge grain. Ibanez has used it on acoustics.
  9. Here it is in direct sunlight. The blue on the outside bursted perfectly and followed the figure just right.
  10. Chuck, Thanks man, that means a lot! Whenever i get burned out or dont feel like working on guitars anymore i go through my favorite builders pics and get some new motivation. Here is a finish im working on. Ive always wanted to do one like this. Dragon burst!
  11. So after the zebrawood body has been sitting there for about a week, its developed a massive amount of large cracks everywhere. I forgot how unstable zebrawood was in thick slabs. Hopefully i can save it.
  12. Hmm, orange peel comes off pretty easily. I can usually start with 2000 grit paper on my finishes. Almost impossible to sand through with 2k paper.
  13. Speaking of such process, I just got this one sealed and sanded to 800. I'll start the color this week. Thinking green, blue and black burst.
  14. Close, but not nearly as work heavy as that. I use a UV cure sealer now. Dries in minutes. 3 coats of sealer, leveled back until its perfectly flat. Sanded to 800 grit before applying color. Then 3 coats of Auto 2k clear. The sanded to 4000 grit, 3 stages of polishing compound. The end!
  15. Welcome to this episode of spot the guitar!
  16. Here is one other project i didnt really plan on. My local wood store got in some 8/4 zebrawood, and i had always wanted to do a zebrawood carved top.
  17. Thanks man! It feels good to get some work done. The full blown desire to build still isnt there, but it felt really good to get some work done. Scott, I love the look of ziricote! I used wenge for the fretboard unfortunately.
  18. I havnt done much guitar works for months. After a lot of personal life stuff that really got me down, i finally got a little motivation to finish up a few projects i have here.
  19. Great looking stuff man. Almost makes me want to start a bunch of new builds!
  20. Thanks man! Fortunatley there was almost no waste. The way the veneer was cut happened to work perfectly with this shape. I knew what i was doing with it before i even bought it! I plan to do a green to blue burst on it. It kind of looks like scales, so hopefully it will look dragon like.
  21. Still havnt done much work lately. Funny how other areas of your life affect your passions. Finally got around to working on this one.
