  1. At least the mahogany SS came out well. Just went with a satin open grain finish. 2 light coats of black basecaot and 2 coats of satin clear.
  2. Well, due to the ziricote not looking anywhere near as good as it did with clear, the buyer wants a refund. So i lost that sale. I really messed up by oiling it. The whole reason i bought that piece was because it had insane color.
  3. It wasnt dye, it was tinted kandy clear.
  4. And on top of htat, here is the red, redwood burl SS in its current state.
  5. I sell all of mine. I couldnt keep that many guitars. I am a minimalist and i only keep 1 for myself.
  6. We have indeed. i used shellac on a walnut guitar a while back. Same thing happened.
  7. Well, back to the default. Had to sand it all off and oil it. I didnt want to do that, because i know ziricote loses all its color and grain lines when oiled. I only put one coat to try to prevent that, but it still got really dark.
  8. Correction, I meant 3/4" past the scale. I hope i caught you in time. I put it at 26.25" for a 25.5" scale. Sorry for the mixup. I was thinking of a wrong scale.

  10. Ive found its a lot easier to cut the headstock shape and neck taper before you glue the fretboard on. Then glue it on full sized and trim it to the neck taper. That way the fretboard isnt in the way when you try to rout the headstock to shape.
  11. For those hipshot bridges, i use the screw holes as the measurement. I have found that putting the screw holes right at 1.25" past the scale length works perfectly.
  12. That was already the second time i re-shot. It does look a lot like madrone. I bought a whole bunch of it recently. I couldnt pass up burl of that quality!
  13. I personally dont think that fretboard wood affects the sound in any way whatsoever. I also think instead of using synthetic fretboard material, just pick a different wood that wont be hard to get, instead of complicating things. Wenge should be around for a long time.
  14. Using 2k Auto clear. I thought i had it this time. I was convinced! But even after superglue filler, UV cure sealer and 2k clear, it still shrunk back into the grain within 2 hours after buffing. Next round is getting sent out for clear instead. The burl is plain old maple burl.
  15. And this came out exactly how i pictured it when i first saw the veneer. Insane!
  16. Got some more work done on the V today. Thanks to Prostheta, I was able to get the headstock shape the customer wanted to the exact size and shape. I also am starting a burl maple 7 string SS. And here is a pic of me with the rhoads for fun.
  17. Thanks guys. Building has been fun lately. I dont think i have ever said that before. I have quite a few other builds planned, its just a matter of getting to them.
  18. Even though that neck has a finish on it already, you are probably better off sanding hte sides of the neck than the neck pocket.
  19. Scott, the red was a last second decision. For some reason once i upload the pictures they lose their quality? The original pictures on my computer have way more depth to the figure than that. I got the first coats of clear on the ziricote tonight. I also tested something i have wanted to try for years, and that is veneering a pickup to match the body. I tried it and in 10 minutes it worked exactly like i hoped.
  20. Even though i hate teles, this is a great job for a first attempt. Great job with the planning.
  21. Thanks scott. Been busy with a lot of different builds and getting finishing touches on a few. That always seems to take longer than the actual woodworking. Here are some pics of the progress on a few.
  22. I still dont care for the real tops as much. So much more expensive and so much harder to work with because they warp so much when i get them. and the ziricote gums up the drum sander instantly. Huge pain.
  23. Might as well start a new thread. While trying to find a full time job i am still building as well as my part time job. Here are a few of my current builds. ziricote SS. I always forget how much ziricote smells like soap when you sand it. 9 Piece flame maple neck with black veneer The rest is standard spec. It is past what pictures i have, right now it is ready for finish sanding. The other in progress build is this redwood burl SS. Maple, mahogany and walnut neck. I am going to attempt a darker red burst around the edges. And last is this custom order. It will be a traditional V, dyed green. Some good grain on this ash.
  24. That is one heck of a guitar, sir scott. Amazing work like always.
  25. Leveling is easy. Its crowning that is the hard part.
