2.5itim
What kind of dye did you use here? That color is awesome!

killemall8
Well, due to the ziricote not looking anywhere near as good as it did with clear, the buyer wants a refund. So i lost that sale. I really messed up by oiling it. The whole reason i bought that piece was because it had insane color.

I didnt want to do that, because i know ziricote loses all its color and grain lines when oiled. I only put one coat to try to prevent that, but it still got really dark. I have been experimenting using a water-based sanding sealer on zircote and then oiling it. I rubbed the sealer in really thin a couple of times and it allowed some oil absorption, enough to deepen the colors and add that glow, but not so much to hide all the cool stuff going on that makes ziricote ziricote. killemall8
At least the mahogany SS came out well. Just went with a satin open grain finish. 2 light coats of black basecaot and 2 coats of satin clear.
KnightroExpress
Killer! I think the open-pore satin option is a great match for your overall aesthetic.

killemall8
Thanks guys. I am really happy that this idea came out exactly like i pictured it. It even feels and plays in the same way i pictured it to with this finish. The back came out especially nice with all the carves. I have a couple of other builds going that i will get some progress pics on tomorrow.
Popular Post killemall8
Here is an update on the 7 string. All routed, drilled and i got the neck glued in tonight.
killemall8
Here are some pics of the green V almost done. I really like this shade of green.
Prostheta
Excellent!! I forget...is that Ash on top? That's really striking.
ScottR
St. Patty's day green! Did you need to do a dark dye step to accent the pores/grain, or did the green dye do that for you? SR
KnightroExpress
That V is so cool... what a great shade of green you hit. I like the Caparison-esque headstock, too!
killemall8
Thanks guys. Pros, It is indeed ash! Scotty, I did dye the grain black a couple times to make sure there would be some contrast. Nitro, It is a color i mixed from a few different dyes. It was an emerald green base dye mixed with some yellow.
killemall8
Here are a couple more projects coming up. I also have a les paul for myself coming up soon. I figured its probably about time i actually make myself a few guitars. Obviously this neck doesnt go with this body.
ScottR
Orcs! I see orcs! By the way, I have always been a bit ambivalent about scarf joint laminations, but the symmetry of this one between the neck and volute is sublime. Very cool! killemall8
Thanks guys. The maple burl 6 is oiled and sitting there waiting for parts. I ran into problems again with every other build i was working on, and had to refund a custom build as well. Needless to say, I am angry and taking a break. Back that that stage of wanting to throw every single guitar related thing through my garage door.
killemall8
Progress has been slow lately. I lost all motivation to build in the past few weeks. Usually when i take a break for this long i get really anxoius wthin a week to start building again. This time is different. I still dont feel any desire to work on them at all. Despite that feeling, i have made some progress on a 7 string. Normally i knock this stuff out in a couple days. But ive just been doing one or two things a day on it. This is before i glued in the neck. It is now sanded and has oil.

ScottR
All your veneers are incredible, but this one is special. It also matches up with the wood exposed by the bevel particularly well. Is there a third wood peeking out that you used for the back or is that an optical illusion? SR
killemall8
Thanks guys. Scott, It is an illusion. That is where the mineral spirits ended so it makes a line looking like it is dark or something.
ScottR
Ahhh. From some of the side shots and in the pick-up route, it looked like you may have found some new timber that is spotted like a cow. SR
