psikoT
Hi there, already finished the building stage, just need to do the final sanding before painting this thing. Here working in the nut...Since I need the strings in place in order to make the nut, I've dressed it with all the hardware and made a quick setup to check that everything works fine...And that's all for now... thanks for watching! ScottR
Even with the plain alder wood, this thing looks great with no finish or paint at all. Your nut slots appear to be fairly wide vee shapes. What type of files did you use?SR

I've started with a triangular file to "open" the upper part of the slot, then I've used calibrated files for the bottom part, where the strings rest. This is the first time I make the slots way taller than the strings, just want to check some bullshit people says about nut making.
Prostheta
Sure, it just looks unfamiliar that's all. Normally a wide V at a nut slot makes you think "bad slotting". I was going to post earlier that the nut can be taken way way down. A radius sanding beam is useful for that since the slots more or less follow the radius of the board. ScottR
I like the look, it works nicely with the rounded fretboard end you've made. If the bottom of the groove is fitted to the string and the shoulders of the slot are not in contact with the string, there is no reason it shouldn't work as well as a nut that has been sanded to the halfway point of the string diameter. It could be better even if contact with the slot walls stops below the halfway point. Less friction and no amount of heavy playing is going to keep the strings from finding their way back home.SR
psikoT
Hi there, winter is coming, so I had to switch the rooms in order to use the heating. I have been cleaning / painting the whole apartment in these last two weeks, so I couldn't make much progress. I found this corner a good place for the mini-workshop, just need to isolate somehow from the rest of the house, hope it doesn't get too cold in winter / too hot in summer... maybe I could build all year round. It is a 2x2 square. Anyway, I finally prepared all the stuff for the finishing stage and gave the first coat of black to the body. It is just kinda water based paint, very opaque. I bought some nitro in ebay and planning to apply over it in the next weeks. Thanks for watching!

psikoT
Hi there,it has been a while since I don't post any update... sorry for the lack of images, finishing process is always a little bit messy for me and the thing just looks terrible until you start polishing. I must admit that it's not being easy, I can't get rid of the scratches and the polish compounds I'm using are not so good as the ones I had in Spain. Couldn't find any good polishing disc either so I had to do it by hand. But I'm getting there, just need to spend my life wiping. Here's a shot in the middle of the process:
ScottR
Wow! We cannot see what you are seeing, it looks phenomenal in the picture. Were you able to keep the back natural?SR
Prostheta
Black is an unforgiving colour. It's proven that your contouring is on the mark. Wow. I'd be worried to lay a finger on it!
psikoT
Wow! We cannot see what you are seeing, it looks phenomenal in the picture. Were you able to keep the back natural?SRNever trust in a picture... Regarding to the back side, I just forgot to say... I changed the bridge at last minute and had to fill the string-thru holes, that's why the whole body is solid black. The reason for why I've replaced the bridge was because I had a mistake measuring the width of the fretboard, including the binding. Then, the 1st and 6th strings were too close to the edge of the fretboard in the 24th fret. The only solution was changing the bridge by one which allows me to setup the string spacing, and this is what I found:It gives me a couple of mm more in the fretboard. Not really a full solution, but it minimizes the mistake. Not sure if I've explained well...

psikoT
No, many of us have been there. *cough*Sorry, I don't get your advanced english... A couple more shots of the back side... the surface ended quite wavy, as the brushing was not really uniform.
ScottR
Yes many of us have done that. Prostheta's "cough" (tos) is just his way of saying including him.I've used that bridge before and liked it.SR
Norris
That is looking stunning
psikoT
Yes many of us have done that. Prostheta's "cough" (tos) is just his way of saying including him.But he said no... anyway, thanks for translation, Scott... sometimes I get lost. The bridge looks way nicer than the previous one. For the next builds I'm gonna spend more money in the hardware, I think is worth. And thanks guys, glad you like it... can't wait to string this thing (which reminds me that I have to buy strings tomorrow)... komodo
Amazing black! I'm about to spray a solid black one, and have another one coming up (very similar design) so this is encouraging!
SwedishLuthier
That! Just wow, love the curves, especially in the heel area. Edited October 29, 2015 by SwedishLuthier
psikoT
Thanks!... I've continued polishing today and finally gave up, so I put all the mask away and this is ready for assembly.
ScottR
But he said no... anyway, thanks for translation, Scott... sometimes I get lost.He said no, as in "No, you're not that only one that's ever happened to......Your English is better than a lot of people I know that have lived here in the US all their lives. And your Austrian must be pretty good as well. All you polylingual people out there have my utmost respect.SR
psikoT
And your Austrian must be pretty good as well. Here people speak german, which is a pain in the butt to learn... I'm here for two years and still don't understand a shit. ^^ I wanted to study in an academy but I really have no time for that. My fellas talk to me in english, cause we're always in a hurry at work... but hope to learn german some day. The good thing is that almost everybody speaks english here - not like in Spain - so I've also improved it a lil bit. You english-spoken people are really lucky, don't have speech problems anywhere in the world. I also respect polylingual people, really envy them... you probably would get surprised to see here in Austria how many young people speak minimum 3 languages, and they have no problem to learn a new one if necessary. I'm too old for that I think...
Prostheta
I wish I'd had chance to learn more languages as a child. My first language is English, then BASIC, assembly and Pascal. I can just about order a beer in PHP or CSS3.
ScottR
I've got a little Spanish, but it's mostly Tex-Mex and may not be recognizable to you at home PsycoT. I also wish I took it in school when I had a chance. I can order a beer though.SR
komodo
I love the body cut and the way it spills out from the upper bout. Also the interplay of the heel cut and the body cut. The headstock really adds another dimension too. Very nice!
psikoT
Hi there, here's the finished thingee... sorry for delay, I had not much time to spend on this. Hope you enjoy the pictures.Maybe was not a good idea to make a solid black guitar, I put it together with the seven strings and this one looks really cheap in comparison. Anyway, it plays smooth and sounds great, I like the long scale but I have to use 0.09 strings for a standard tuning. Thanks for watching!
