Prostheta
Well, I guessed you hadn't dressed the corners. Your work is good as a "spot the difference" to figure out what you're improving on from guitar to guitar. What's that gunk next to the frets in the upper positions? Are you gluing frets in now? No gluing for me. Its actually tape and buffing compound residue from when i buffed the frets and had it taped off. Should come off quickly with a wiping with mineral spirits. killemall8
Here are some pics of the sapele explorer i did a few months ago. I never realized how hard it is to get good pics of the side of the fretboard. The shininess of the frets doesnt show up at all. Also has a little dust since it has been sitting there since september.
Prostheta
Judging by the EXIF info, there are a number of things you could probably do to help that one. Primarily I think lighting is the key though. Shiny things easily overexpose. Do you shoot raw with that camera and adjust back at the desktop? I tend to use aperture priority mode a lot for glory pics, generally for a narrow depth of field and plenty of bokeh like you're getting a fair bit of. Can you actually get different lenses for that model....? A nice fast 50mm is on my list to improve photography. Thing is, more in the toybox is good and all, but playing around with your lighting and getting a feel for what works best is free and far more important. I bet you bought that model for the ridiculously cool moonshots, eh? ;-)
Prostheta
Sorry, I was thinking of the P900.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eP2x47nHmc
killemall8
The camera i use is a pretty cheap L830. I dont think you can even adjust the aperture or anything else on it. I actually use my extremely cheap fuji XP for most pictures except finished models.
Prostheta
We just upgraded to a Canon EOS100D for ProjectGuitar.com work and it's really showing results. Totally better than our old workhorse 1000D, which is maybe 8yrs old now. Having control over the aperture makes a difference, definitely. You could probably pick up an old DSLR body and kit lens for a couple of hundred....another hundred for a fast 50mm lens and you're golden. I've just spent three hours shooting with the 100D, making truss rods. I hope I chose appropriate settings....I don't think I was shooting raw.... killemall8
Here is one i am just getting to the finish stage now. A bubinga rhoads order i took a couple weeks ago. Prostheta
I can dig the fixed bridge. I gave a neck-through Japanese Jackson Rhoads to a friend purely because it had a trem. Looking good.

They definitely dont look good with hardtail bridges.
Prostheta
Oh totally. I do think that recessing to maintain a flatter angle is a bit weird though. I prefer TOM setups to have a bit of depth under the strings. I'm a bit schizophrenic when it comes to how I play on either height.
killemall8
The only reason i have been doing it is because there is this whole new fad about those hipshot hardtails. People for some reason think they are the best looking and feeling bridge out there and htey like the low feel. So i have been doing it to make it feel lower like them. ON this one, the customer specifically asked to have it recessed. I personally think those hipshot bridges are extremely overrated and i despise working with them and making guitars with them. ScottR
Other than a TOM, what bridge do you prefer then? SR
killemall8
1 hour ago, ScottR said: Other than a TOM, what bridge do you prefer then? SR None, good sir! That is the only one i really prefer. I finally got the detail work done on this 7 string. It had been sitting there for a while becuase i had a committed buyer who wasnt sure what pickups he was going to put in it, only to find out he couldnt pay for it. So i threw some duncan nazgul/ sentient pickups in it and called it good. It is really cloudy, so the burl doesnt show its true figurte.
ScottR
That is stunning. I like the space under the strings you get from a TOM. But I prefer to be able to adjust the saddle height for individual strings. SR

I always enjoy getting family pictures of them when i have bunch on hand. I just added another one to the bunch today as well. Olive ash EXP. Maple and mahogany neck. I used some macassar ebony veneer between the scarf and i really like the way it came out.

komodo
Your necks all look quartersawn and laminated. Are you putting carbon bars in there as well?

No sir, no carbon bars for me. I think the necks are stable enough on their own. PLus they are so expensive.
killemall8
I have the olive ash burl strung up for testing before i finish sand it. This one is it. The neck, playability and feel is exactly what i have been looking to get. Every now and then i make one that just feels so much more natural and perfect while you play it. I cant wait to get this one oiled up and ready to go.
Prostheta
Are you able to quantify exactly what these differences are from neck to neck? That would be a great way forwards to consistency. Then again, what is consistent or comfortable to you may be a rubbery neck or a baseball bat to another.
