psikoT
Hi there, this is my (WIP) latest build. I've started a couple of months ago, so the building process is almost finished. The specs are: - One piece Ash body, Wenge top - Mahogany/Sapelle/Maple laminated neck - Macassar Ebony fingerboard - 7 strings, 25.5" length scale - Cheap components This is the initial design: Wood selection... Body contour... 7 mm wenge top... 5 piece laminated neck Glueing ears... Stupid mockup... Slotting fingerboard... Double binding... Logo made with bone... Headstock contouring... Binding time... Neck binded... Routing the neck pocket... More to come.
psikoT
More pictures... Rough carve in the neck back... Side dots made of bone... Neck carving... Dot markers and fretboard with 16" radio...
psikoT
Routing for binding... Binding time... Giving a security contour, ready for carved... Carving the top... And the finished product... Also carved the whole back... That's all for now... it still needs the fret job, but near to completion. Hope you like it! avengers63
- Cheap components Don't do that. You'll regret it. Yes, I know this from experience. There is a HUGE difference in quality between cheap parts and inexpensive parts. No, you certainly don't have to spend $75 on a hardtail bridge, but you will have a crap product if you spend $15. If money is an issue, scour eBay for used parts. They are there in spades, and you will get a LOT more bang for your buck, and you'll be much happier with the guitar in the long run. verhoevenc
I'm hoping there's some time lapse there or I was just put to shame and this went together SO quickly! Looks nice. Didn't know how I'd feel about that deep carve with the multiple woods AND binding.... but I like it now that I see it. Where do you live man? Looks nice as heck off your balcony! psikoT
No, you certainly don't have to spend $75 on a hardtail bridge, but you will have a crap product if you spend $15. I bought the hardtail in eBay, it cost exactly... errrm... $15 XD it looks good, but sure there are better bridges out there. However, it's very difficult to buy 'inexpensive' parts for a 7 string, I had to buy 2 complete hedstocks to get the extra tuner... anyway, you always can upgrade them later. I'm hoping there's some time lapse there or I was just put to shame and this went together SO quickly! Yes, as I said at beginning, I started the project 2 months ago... sorry, I feel a bit 'insecure' in this forum, there are too much serious builders here. I live in Almería, south of Spain... thanks for comments!
FireFly
Several things: 1. I like the wood/binding combinations! 2. The shape and contours didn't appeal to me at first, but now that I see a finished stock, I can see where you were going with it and am impressed. Good clean work! 3. I love to see little teeny wood shavings. It means you took your time, used proper bits, and made sure the project was done correctly before moving on to the next step. 4. All in an apartment? I love the balcony view while working on these kinds of things, but I bet you have some angry neighbors lol. 5. That pink towel is awesome
psikoT
I was expecting the joke about the pink towel... sorry, I didn't focus on the color of the towel while working on wood... XD Yes, I work in my apartment... I make the 'dirty' job in the balcony but I have a little 'workship' in a room... my neighbors are more noisy than me, I don't care. thanks for comments! crazygtr
You just destroyed a good towel..........Nice build! The way that wenge flows with the contours is awesome.
psikoT
Thanks! Today's work... putting the frets. Now the topic runs at realtime... XD Also a quick preview of the whole thing... i like it, just that. Thanks for watching!
demonx
Your work is very neat and tidy, definitely no need to feel "insecure", you put the some of us "serious builders" to shame! We'll have to lift our game! When I saw the title "7 Strings Ash/Wenge" I thought it was going to look very similar to a Ash/Wenge 7 String I'm building for myself, but you took it in a complete different direction! Love the double binding. Ive done that once and always planned to do it again on something, its a very cool/classy look This was my take on Ash/Wenge 7 string - I havent finished it yet. demonx
There's much better builders out there to follow than me but thanks for the kind words! You're certainly on the right track
Anthony
Sweet sweet carve. Also, your logo looks like the Alienware logo. Which is awesome.
RestorationAD
Smoking. I am impressed by the daring/insane carve on the body. That was a huge leap of faith. Whenever a luthier relies on their ability to create lines in 2 different woods through a carve it is worth watching.I am not sold on the neck/headstock binding but I will "hang fire" until the finish. (<--you saw that right Pro?_)Continue on \m/

ScottR
Well, Bob beat me to the words but I'm going to say them again anyway. Beautifully planned and executed. You've got skills to burn and a great view as well. ....and the towel didn't look so pink from where I'm sitting. Wenge dust is hard on everything. theodoropoulos
ι have seen guitar being "destroyed" by "wrong" finishes...very nice job man! by the way i always had this question: how do you hold the pickup in the cavity when there is no ring?? basically how do you set up /dοwn the pick up??
avengers63
You just screw the pup into the wood through the holes in the tabs. Height is adjusted via spacers underneath, if necessary.
Shelvock
That's a GOTM right there if ever I saw one!
