kpcrash
This is a rather striking piece of 5/4 cherry that I'd like to make into a guitar... but am stuck on what shape. Another Strat? Tele? RG? Thoughts or opinions appreciated.
frets
I think a jazzmaster/telemaster would be cool in cherry. Or just design your own thing.
dpm99
Bass VI ftw! The world needs more of those anyway.
pauliemc
V Im about to start one today & im buzzing with excitement on it. hardly ever get to build one, which is a pity koz they are soooo cool. so in conclusion. build a V
Reinhold
I'd agree with a bass vi, I just planned one out (sort of fender jaguar meets a melted P bass) that would look fantastic with that wood. A piece like that screams offset guitar to me for some reason. Edited August 25, 2011 by Reinhold
Workingman
Tele bass. It would be a cherrycaster.
ihocky2
If you want something offset, you can't go wrong with a Corvus!!
Tim37
i see a tele with p90's and a tortis pickgaurd.
ScottR
Yeah, I'm seeing a tele too. P-90s would be a nice touch (love em), but I'm seeing a black pickguard. Sr
kpcrash
Corvus?? Hmmm... well, it would seem a non-standard tele is a consensus. I'll start this build when I get back from Hurricane Irene duty.....
Mors Phagist
Go for the V!
Mender
The simple answer to your problem is to give that timber to me. That way, it will be my problem

Svento
Would look nice on something like a Les Paul Junior with a double cuttaway. P90 pickup and a white Sonex style pickup shield.
kpcrash
So.... obviously.... it's been a while - we all know the reasons, work, family, life... anyway here the first new shots of that chunk of cherry. I'm calling it the Celticaster. I'm sure opinions will vary wildly here, but it's an experiment. It's wet w/ Mineral Spirits in the pics. I guess if nothing else - it's a unique twist on doing a 'carve top' Body Shot: A bit of clean up to sharpening some of the curves and then it's time to decide if I should fill the low spots with a lightly colored epoxy.... or just leave it all clear. Mender
Apart from the shape (the Tele isn't my favourite guitar shape), that looks great, very novel. I'm looking forward to watching the progress on this one
Our Souls inc.
I for one LOVE the knotwork !! I sport some knotwork on my skin, so I'm partial to it. Fill in the low spots with black epoxy and you'll have amazing detail to the carve. Great job, very unique !!!!
kpcrash
Thanks guys! My dremel is hating life Next Monday is a holiday at work, so I might get some time to do more with it. I have some purpleheart that I've already cut for fretboards, but might just go all maple for a neck?
WezV
looks good but i dont think i would have carved under the bridge
kpcrash
looks good but i dont think i would have carved under the bridge DOH! and now you know the point in time at which I started highly considering filling in everything with epoxy.... I had outlined the bridge and everything, and just went on a carving frenzy, paying more attention to the lines I had drawn for the knots than anything else.. Workingman
It looks great but I don't know about finish sanding the low areas. For the bridge, how about routing a recess and putting a nice 80's style sustain block in?
