avengers63
I got me some poplar. I found a nice piece 8" wide & 12' long and a mammoth 16"wide by 10' long piece that'll make some nice 1-piece bodies. I'm not feeling the need for the wood to take too much time to acclimate. I bought it across town - same region, temperature, etc. I think by this time tomorrow you can see a rough body. Don't get too excited now, Pete. We all know you're really having Corvus envy. ToddW
Don't get too excited now, Pete. We all know you're really having Corvus envy. Is that why he's turning green? I thought he had Corvusophobia? Or maybe gets Corvusarrhea? I'm told you can treat both with Ativan.
psw
No...not envy...worried...worried that you will make a fleet of them as you normally do when you get some cheap wood and discover like gibson you can just cookie cutter them out! psw
Q: "How Do I Make An Uglier Guitar Than A Covus?" A: "Cut Off It's Head!" Post: "What Do I Do If I Dont Know What Shape I Want My Guitar Body, nothing sticks out to me" Reply: "Build a Corvus" Q: "What is the collective noun for a whole bunch of Corvusesses's...ummm...?" A: Glad you asked! Well, it's Latin, so it would be a "Murder of Corvus", however, it is the only collective noun that can also be used for the singular...just one on it's own is a Major Crime! In E.A. Poes famous poem 'the raven' the raven quoth 'Nevermore' Q: "What did the Raven say when he heard about a potential Corvus Build Off?" A: he reverted back to his native instincts and all he could say was "FARK"! Edited March 10, 2009 by psw

psw
In a far away land, the tradition was that the most handsome man in the village was paired with the ugliest girl in marriage. On the eve of his wedding, sad, alone and outcast he was visited upon by his future father-in-law. A handsome man, though prematurely aged, he offered comfort. “I know how you feel son, I felt the exact same way but on my wedding eve my father-in-law gave me this to ease the pain and remind me ~ well remind me that there was something worse!” At that moment, he drew as if a sword, something he had been concealing behind his back ~ the young man gasped in horror. After some time he asked, “W-w-w-w-what is that, that…thing!” The father-in-law replied, “well at first it was called the ugly stick” but then in hushed tones, as if remembering how his wife had not improved with age and become the local witch he said “but now the villagers all know it as ~ The Corvus!”
avengers63
this is really making me want to build one... i think we should do a corvus build off So what... you just had a need to kick my a$$? You'll probably pull off some fanned fret jobby with a zircote fretboard and some other funky wood porn bling. I'm probably going to end up with an Eden paddle-head that I'll recut into a headless and a poplar body painted orange. Yea... THAT'S an equal comparison. Can I join? Your mother. In all seriousness, I have no objections to a build-off. Let's continue this in another thread.....
ToddW
Yeah Wez, I think that's a great idea...hehe We could have "The Great Corvus Build-Off" I'm in, but I have two in progress right now, so I may not be able to complete it in time for the judging. psw
Q: How do you "relic" a Covus A: Polish it up as if it had come straight off the showroom floor, for like the original, it should look like it has never been played (or even seen the light of day!) avengers63
Gluing up a pair of body blanks. One for me, one for the Bay. With Pete's good teaching, we know that Corvus means crow, and that more than one could constitute a flock. From my swamp shall this thing come, this Murder Of Crows. Wez, I fully expect you to be the only one to get the reference, but can you tell me what I'm actually referencing? psw
Murder Of Crows.... Q: "What is the collective noun for a whole bunch of Corvusesses's...ummm...?" A: Glad you asked! Well, it's Latin, so it would be a "Murder of Corvus", however, it is the only collective noun that can also be used for the singular...just one on it's own is a Major Crime! True Fact: A group of crows is called a "murder." This name came about because a group of crows will sometimes kill a dying crow. A bad film starring Gooding Jnr? Agatha Christie? Shakespeare? ... I knew that you'd be building more than one...quantity does not make desirability however pete
avengers63
Incorrect on your guesses. Only one is for me. The other is just a body. I figure I'll post it with an opening bid of $25 & no reserve and see what happens. With it being a reward in GH, someone might actually want it. If it only goes for the opening bid, I'll have more than doubled my money from the cost of the wood alone, so no worries.
westhemann
There was a book called "something wicked this way comes" and on the cover was a circular representation of a multitude of crow's wings...which would make a great inlay,if you did that sort of thing. WezV is not the only "well read" member of this forum.I wager between the ages of 3 or so to age 30 I read more than a few thousand books ranging from science fiction/fantasy to Historical drama... WezV
i didnt know the reference of the top of my head but i guessed comic book. the humerous thing is that i was talking about swamp thing with some of my students earlier and was also just talking to my fiancee about how i really need to get around to buying them - i guess thats settled it. 3 swamp thing events in 1 day means it really must be purchased. i am off to amazon i am not that well read... i used to read 3-5 books a week between the ages of 12-21 but once i started with the guitars it slowed down and i feel very under read recently. The graphic novels are actually a new thing for me (last 3 years) which is why i hadnt read swamp thing already

westhemann
So you took an intelligent reference to a literary work of art(in my mind) and turned it into a comic book issue reference? Just as well..the corvus deserves nothing more.
psw
Most of my references predated the comic I'm sure and are in fact true...however, none of those book contained illustrations, so I guess the comic wins! Shows you how illiterate I am...
avengers63
So you took an intelligent reference to a literary work of art(in my mind) and turned it into a comic book issue reference? Shows what you know. Alan Moore (the author of this part of the series) is one of the most intelligent writers in the industry. He doesn't write comic books, he writes modern fiction which happens to use comics as the storytelling medium.
westhemann
is one of the most intelligent writers in the industry. Umm...in the COMIC book industry?...Oh,so he is right up there with Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov then... :D

Umm...in the COMIC book industry?...Oh,so he is right up there with Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov then... Hmmm, let's see... Carl Sagan was an astronomer... Isaac Asimov wrote sci-fi and science textbooks... Nope. They're not up to his level as an author yet. Dismiss Alan Moore all you like because of his chosen medium, but until you've read his work, you're not qualified to criticize him.
westhemann
ummm..ahem http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=s...amp;x=0&y=0 And Isaac Asimov was brilliant enough to include theories in his science fiction books which were decades ahead of his time and is recognized as brilliant by ...well,everyone... I have yet to see a "swamp thing"...even in my trips through Louisiana... Dismiss Alan Moore all you like because of his chosen medium, but until you've read his work, you're not qualified to criticize him. This logic is as faulty as all of your logic, which is why(try as we might),Pete and I can't convince you to disregard the Corvus as a "chosen medium". Ah well...I guess the world needs simplistic trivialities in some ways as much as serious science...I mean...(for example only) how would we ever get our daily intake of 200 grams of fat without the simplistic ideas of the Mcdonalds franchise that the more grease it has,the more it will sell. And without disregarding the serious science that proves that level of fat intake results in Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, and ultimately premature death, how would Mcdonalds ever live with the horror of what they and the rest of the fast food industry is doing to the health and well being of our country? Dismiss Alan Moore all you like because of his chosen medium, but until you've read his work, you're not qualified to criticize him. I hate arguments about who's smarter, or who's a better author. I was lucky enough to hear Asimov speak and then get to meet and speak with him about writing. That was ages and ages ago, but he was a pretty bright guy. I remember I liked him, but thought the beard was silly. You either have a lot of ego to think you look good in mutton chops, or you have really bad taste. Sagan was at Cornell when I went there. Also a bright guy, but couldn't say if he was actually brilliant or just provocative. Moore is a wing nut who writes entertaining comic books/graphic novels. I like the Japanese style better, and Moore's beard was/is worse than Asimov's was! Tell me he doesn't look like Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies in his public photos.
