westhemann
I keep "dummy parts" on hand...I have an EMG HZ I use for pickup dimensions,a broken kahler trem I use for that, locking nuts,tuners,etc....I use all that to fit the parts, then I order the parts I want when the guitar is finished. John Abbett
I alway have the bridge and tail before I finish the guitar, so I can drill the holes before final sanding. I rarely have the pickups and the misc hardware before it's finished. Things like straplocks I pick up usually after the guitar is finished as part of an order for another guitar. I keep a broken pot, switch and jack on hand to be able to measure when I drill holes. I don't keep stock on them. -John
erikbojerik
No. But I always have the bridge in hand before I cut wood! Soooooo many things depend on the bridge - neck angle, fretboard radius, pickup rout depths & locations, control positions, etc - you just cannot wait or change your mind on the bridge in the middle of the build and expect to have any of those things work out. Kenny
i never have any hardware..but i build most of mine so i know where it would be...
avengers63
I don't have the parts for THAT guitar, but I have enough from OTHER guitars to be able to do most of it. I'll get in the parts in the first month of the build, but usually none of them are on hand when I start it.
Narcissism
I'm sure if i were to build for other people, then I would use the first half of the payment to buy parts so that I can have them all in front of me. There are just a few things I won't do without the parts in front of me though. You know, obvious things, like placing the bridge, or tuners, or sizing the nut, or routing pickups (unless you use the same pickups every time). WezV
I'm sure if i were to build for other people, then I would use the first half of the payment to buy parts so that I can have them all in front of me. pretty much the way i do it. for my own builds the only thing i need before i start is the bridge

Crowella
For this first one I'm building, I am, because I want to look at them all with glittery eyes and go "ooh". ... and also because I ordered everything at the same time and they will all arrive together. wood is good
I agree with a few others here, all I have when i start is the bridge. But I use pretty much the same bridge on every build, so I already know the height and stuff.
Keegan
Have the parts before you cut screw holes or anything, but not too early, and definitely don't wait until after it's "done" to buy everything, or you'll have a bunch of parts that don't quite fit. Bygde
I have all the parts in front of me. I like to plan out the whole guitar before doing any woodwork, and I want to visually see that it all comes together instead of guessing.
