avengers63
I don't have anything productive to add, but this is a VERY cool project.
Xanthus
I really like the artwork, Doug! And I can't wait to hear some clips/see some progress pics of the finishing process. The text is a bit hard to read, though. Color scheme, font choice, I dunno my buddies are the art majors. Great picture though, very menacing. HuntinDoug
Well...Nothing like a case of the flu to bring production to a screeching hault. HuntinDoug
OK...After 5 1/2 days of the flu, I think (hope) I'm back. The bright side is I think I lost about 20 lbs Here is the maple neck that goes on the 2nd prototype. When finished, this one will go to a friend for Christmas. A little late, but what the hey. He really liked this neck, but not the frets, so I poped them out, and will replace them with the Jescar gold EVO jumbo's. I wanted to use the laser to burn spots in the FB, but the end result was too rough. So, instead I "dirtied up" the board with various dyes. It wasnt exactly the effect I was looking for, but it will do I think. If I don't like the finished product, I can always make another neck later on. avengers63
The "dirty" fretboard is pretty firring for the toxic waste theme. It is reminiscent of a rusty barrel.
ae3
The fretboard looks like radiation poisoning! Those inlays are really nice. Good to hear your feeling better, I was quite worried that I wasn't going to see any progress for a long while
HuntinDoug
Just got off the phone with Mike Learn. The 2 prototypes are going to him for airbrush as soon as I get them base coated. If youve never seen his work, check it out...it's amazing: http://www.mikelearn.com
anderekel
I'm talkin' to mike online right now, so I had to ask about ya. hehe He said you're a great guy and whatnot. I can't wait to see what he does on them.
Chuck_Chill-Out
Doug, great looking build. I worked in radiation safety years ago and this would have bneen very appropriate. I can't wait to see the finished build.

HuntinDoug
OK... I have been doing R&D for this project since my last post. The customer that get's this neck wanted it to be dirtier. He wanted an "Excessive...over the top...almost cremated look". So, here you go. I'm not sure if I can get it much dirtier looking without ruining the playability. Although, I'll probobly add some more black splatters before fretting. The inlay is the glow material I mentioned in an earlier post. It's .125" thick, with the glowing part at the bottom. The idea was to make it look like the radioactive material was splattered on, and is burning down into the board. I also decided to make each neck slightly different. The distressing will range from mild, to extreme. Let me know what you guy's think... http://www.parableguitars.com/ptnuke/ptnuke13.jpg http://www.parableguitars.com/ptnuke/ptnuke14.jpg http://www.parableguitars.com/ptnuke/ptnuke15.jpg
Narcissism
That looks really neat! Its amazing what you can do with a little stain splatter. I like the glow-in-the-dark inlays too.

HuntinDoug
I spent yesterday working on 3 necks. All with maple boards. One is a non distressed neck. This pic is of the one with the glowing inlay. The idea was to distress the back of the neck while maintaining a smooth surface. At the same time I wanted a hint of a caution bar design. I used yellow analine dye, then masked it off, and put the black stripes on, again with analine dye. After sanding with 500 grit, I went back and did the splatter. Then sanded with 1000 grit. The neck is very smooth. It should darken up a bit after the clear goes on. Edited January 2, 2009 by HuntinDoug
j. pierce
I'm a not a big fan of faux-distressed finishes, but this is something entirely different; and I love it!
Xanthus
I want to touch that. It looks so intense. Awesome work. And the splatter really doesn't build up enough that it gets lumpy? Sweet.
carousel182
Wow! I really like that look. This is gonna be awesome.
HuntinDoug
And the splatter really doesn't build up enough that it gets lumpy? The analine dye is mixed in denatured alcohol, so it evaporates quickly and doesnt leave any noticeable residue.
mattharris75
Phenomenal work Doug. Really love that neck. And this headstock design will compliment the rest of the guitar so much better than the strat headstock on the first build!
fookgub
I'm a not a big fan of faux-distressed finishes, but this is something entirely different; and I love it! I agree. Great job on the post-apocalyptic look.
J_48_Johnson
How did I miss this thread?!? You came up with some of the sickest ideas I've ever seen on a guitar. Congrats are in order. Also, the clear topped diamond plate case is a great idea! Now if you can find something to etch the diamond plate case to match the radioactive waste mess on the neck.... Prostheta
Heh....although bulky, you could fit four guitars into something like this: http://www.atnuke.com/nuclear/lead/15gall.htm
