rhoads56
I got this piece of Maple burl off a fellow forumite. When it arrived, I knew exactly what to build. I posted my idea/plan on another forum, and Rick jumped at the chance to order it. Body: Maple burl Neck: Indian Rosewood Fretboard: Indian Rosewood Electronics: Ormsby Handwound P90 style Hardware: Tonepros bridge, Gotoh machineheads Maple burl is warmer than straight Maple, so i knew it would be suitable for a body. The Rosewood neck tames the highs a little too.
avengers63
Burls are commonly very soft and unstable. How is this one? Did you use anything to harden or stabalize it?
rhoads56
Its maple, and tough as hell.
Kenny
wow, solid maple body....thats adventurous! but burl is much much softer so i can undestand that :-p any ideas regarding that finish? i personally think you should compliment the blues in your abalone
rhoads56
Ormsby Sharks
avengers63
buffer Those sharks are pretty cool. I'm anticipating the burl being dyed a sea-green/turquoise blue combo to represent water. Edited October 20, 2008 by avengers63
rhoads56
I actually made up a sample of different colour grain fillers, and here is the blue version. In the end, it was decided to stick with brown.

joshvegas
if you'd stained it blue and filled with white ontop of it you'd have a sweet water effect however it looks ace as is!
rhoads56
Its hard to stain blue over timber that it this colour. It comes out funny.
joshvegas
That would be a very good reason not to! I must admit I thought it liked lighter in a previos picture.

verhoevenc
I hope this turns out well... it's a gorgeous piece of wood, but like others have said burls are quite an unstable wood... but at that thickness it may not matter. As for what you said about burl being warmer, chances are it's because all the burled maple you've ever played around with it big leaf maple, which in general has a warmer sound than the other harder maples. However, I would have been slightly weary of this piece still because the more convoluted the grain becomes, the worse it becomes as transmitting and holding sounds... the best sounding maple's always gunna be the boring straight grained stuff... this being at the other end of the spectrum. You will probably wanna make the P90s so that they do a fair amount of coloring of the sound. Chris

avengers63
buffer DANG I loves me some burl. So... since burl is REALLY expensive, wht didn't you resaw a chunk off, bookmatch it, and have a lot left over for other guitars? avengers63
Why not be unique and just use the whole lot? I'm just thinking about the economics. But... if the customer wants it that way and is willing to paying for it, they can have whatever they want.
