killemall8
well, i decided not to use that poplar for a build of my own. instead i will be making an explorer. esp headstock, the best most beautiful fretboard thanks to erik. this will have 28 frets! i have to save up some money for some more mahoany. but good news is i found another guitar builder that went to my highschool, and he has much better tools than me, and i can use whatever i want. and he also has a business liscence, so we put that on file at the place i get wood from, and i get a discount now. so here is the neck so far, it is the lightest colored and lightest weight african mahogany ive ever seen and felt. http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/k...coconeck005.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/k...coconeck003.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/k...coconeck006.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/k...coconeck002.jpg Edited April 18, 2008 by killemall8

anderekel
Dang, now my cocobolo fretboard doesn't look so cool, hehe. Fretboard looks awesome as does the rest of the neck. In the second to last link, the back of the neck, it looks like there is a heel and then it dips down and then another heel, what's that for? In the second to last link, the back of the neck, it looks like there is a heel and then it dips down and then another heel, what's that for? since all i do are set necks, i have to glue a extra piece to make it thick enough. so what i do is i make a rough carve, then i do a exact carve up to the point where the extra piece will be glued up. so its basicly just a marker of where the extra piece will end. i could just carve all the way up to there, but since i change my mind so much about different body shapes, i would like to have the most options. since some bodies require more length of the heal, i just leave it a longer until i know exactly what shape im doing. i know, that was kind of all over the place, i dont know why. killemall8
got the neck fretted. biggest stainless steel fretwire i could find. 28 frets, but that last fret might be pushing it. but i can guarantee no one else wil have one like this! http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/k...Fretneck002.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/k...Fretneck003.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/k...Fretneck004.jpg Edited April 22, 2008 by killemall8

What's the thickness on that neck? Looks a bit on the thin side to me?
killemall8
after the carve, or at the heal with no carve? it isnt very thin. it's a little over 3/4 at the heal.
Geo
Man, you'll really want to protect that cocobolo. I made a guitar with a cocobolo fingerboard and the board is now almost entirely black. It was the usual orange and brown when I put it on. (Oxidation, I think?) I would hate to see such a beautiful piece of wood go the same way. killemall8
thats wierd. ive never experienced that with my coco boards. my les paul from last summer never got dark. i wonder whats up with that.
Daniel Sorbera
All rosewoods darken a bit, but I've never had a piece of coco turn black. All of mine are still pleasing after a few years. Your piece looks good, you might consider going a bit thinner on the fingerboard next time. That will allow more wood behind the trussrod at the same neck thickness which is especially helpful with mahogany necks.
Dudz
Thats the best fingerboard I've ever seen! 28 frets? I bet Steve Vai would like this.
erikbojerik
Lovely! It's looking great so far! :D
killemall8
it is a very awesome board. and oh, Daniel, it is actually only about 3/16" thick. it looks a bit thicker in the pics. it started as 1/4" and i raidused it down to the thickness where the fret tang would be almost flush with the bottom of the fretslots. thanks again Erik!
