Daniel Sorbera
A friends Fender bass is getting some weird intermittent popping sounds through the amp (only when playing on the strings). It happens on both pickups, with the controls set active or passive. It's definitely the bass and not the amp. But it looks like a rats nest in the control cavity. Any ideas on where I should start? Popping? My gut says that could only come amplification, i.e. onboard preamp or else in the amp. But I may have misunderstood your description. If it's more like the sound randomly cutting out, that would probably be a bad joint somewhere between the pickup leads and output jack. BTW, did you eliminate the cable? Those things can get crazy when they go bad.
