Simo
Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted any of my work on here... in fact I've had to take a bit of a break from guitar building for a couple of months but I'm back in full swing now. After much head scratching I've decided to put my last guitar build on the shelf (some of you will remember seeing my Black Limba Singlecut on here) and start a fresh. Although there were no major errors with it, there were just too many small things that bugged me (I'm a bit of a perfectionist ), especially after starting work on my 6 string bass I could see that my work could be (and should be) a lot better. Anyway, don't panic the Singlecut won't be WOD'd or burnt I'm sure I'll do something with it one day but for now I want to concentrate on other projects. The 6 string bass is coming along nicely, in fact it's almost ready for final sanding and finishing (updates coming soon), while I was waiting for some side dot material to arrive (bloody postal strikes ) I decided to start work on my next guitar, here's the spec... Korina body with an English Walnut top Wilkinson trem 2 humbuckers (not decided what I'm using yet) 22 fret, 25.5 scale I'm still undecided on the neck/fretboard wood, I do have a piece of Wenge that I'll be planing tomorrow, so we'll see... a Wenge neck is tempting, I'm just not sure if I want anymore splinters! Anyway, here's some pic's, sorry if some of them aren't that great, my camera is on it's last legs so these were taken on my phone. The English Walnut top(s) http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssbookmatch.jpg Glued on to the Korina http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssblank.jpg Sanding the edges after routing http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/sssandingedges.jpg Sanded to shape, front... http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssbodyshaped.jpg ...and back http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssback.jpg Rounded over, front... http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssroundedover.jpg ...and back http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssroundedover_rear.jpg Bridge pickup and front trem cavity routed http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssfront_routed.jpg Rear trem cavity http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssrear_routed.jpg Control cavity http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/ssrear_cavity.jpg And finally a shot of the rear as it looks now... Simo
Thanks guys I'm still waiting for some Maple for the neck to arrive before I can really get stuck into some more work on this project. Today I decided to spend some time making a cavity control cover and trem cover, they were cut from an off-cut of the top wood, I didn't have time to finish them today but here's a pic to give you an idea of how they look... Simo
I made a start on the neck this afternoon, the neck laminates were glued and the Maple binding was attached to the fretboard. You can see more pic's on my new blog... http://www.simnettguitars.com Here's a shot of the Maple/Wenge neck laminates, Wenge fretboard and Maple binding being held in place, obviously they're not glued but it gives you an idea of how it's going to look
Xanthus
Sweet jesus how did I miss this thread? That top is to die for! The only thing I'd have done would be to put a black contrast line down the middle before gluing. But it looks amazing anyways! Congrats on such a sweet build! Simo
I've now routed the truss rod channel and added 'ears' to the headstock. I've also made a bit more progress on the body too, the rear gut cut has been carved out.... More updates coming soon
killemall8
this is going to be a great looking guitar. is that body really thick? in that last pic the heal looks really thick.
Simo
It was all going too well.... while routing the neck this afternoon a chunk of Wenge splintered off and unluckily for me it's not in a place that will be carved out. There's a chance it could be repaired but I doubt it will be unnoticeable and being a bit of perfectionist I'm going to start over on the neck. Carl762
Awesome. My goal is to achieve the perfect clean look in my woodworking, as you're obviously doing regularly.
Simo
this is going to be a great looking guitar. is that body really thick? in that last pic the heal looks really thick. Nope, it's 1 3/4" thick. Real nice Simo, always super clean work. How's the bass going? The bass is going good thanks, the body just needs final sanding and the neck needs a bit of fretwork doing and then it'll be ready for finishing Awesome. My goal is to achieve the perfect clean look in my woodworking, as you're obviously doing regularly. Thanks yeah apart from the disaster with the original neck i'm quite happy with the way this one's turning out. There's been a bit of a change with the neck... the original plan was to make a neck with a 3x3 headstock and attach it to the body using a deep set neck joint. However, after the mishap with the original neck I was considering using a Strat style headstock instead, so I pulled out a part finished Strat neck that had been collecting dust under my workbench (I made it last year for a friends guitar but ended up not using it) and rested it in position on top of the body to get an idea of how it would look, which then gave me an idea... yes you've guessed it, I've decided to change the guitar to a bolt on and use the Strat neck. It's made from 2 pieces of Black Limba with a Mac Ebony fretboard. Neck pocket routed... http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/neckpocketrouted.jpg Test fit... http://usera.imagecave.com/Simo/necktestfit.jpg
WezV
i gotta get the other lot of this walnut onto a guitar soon!!! - it looks great on your strat. I glued up the walnut body blank i got from you the so maybe a whole walnut body is in order for the rest of you - here is the matching set of english walnut i got from simo as well as a few body blanks (black walnut, mahogany and idigbo) recently its huge - i was tempted to do a double neck strat but we will see if funds permit two lots of hardware
Simo
That piece of wood is just crying out to be made into a double neck
Geo
Strat looks great, man! For some reason I love the look of a guitar when the neck has been attached but it hasn't been finished... just some weird attraction I have... maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it.... Wez, I also vote for a double neck strat on that giant piece of walnut!
avengers63
Don't ya think a double-neck SG or PRS would follow the curve of the grain better?
WezV
Don't ya think a double-neck SG or PRS would follow the curve of the grain better? cant really see how that would fit better or worse, but each to there own. anyway - look at simo's.... sorry for the de-rail
travismoore
I'm not a fan of super-strats but thats one of the best iv ever seen! Keep up the good work =D
Simo
It think I'll win the prize for the slowest build in history ;D I had a bit of spare time on my hands today so I made a start on the final sanding. There were a few areas of the top with some slight tear out from the round over, only very minor tear out but it was a major pain to sand out but it was all worth while when I saw the results when it was wiped over with some Naptha. Another pic... http://usera.imagecave.com/banger/sanding2.jpg All is not lost with the Wenge blank... although the neck was scrap I've managed to make a neck blank up from the section that was cut out of the back of the original blank, along with a plain piece of Wenge for the headstock/ears. Not sure what I'll use it for yet but I'm sure it will come in for something! http://usera.imagecave.com/banger/wenge534.jpg :
