thrasher!
This sounds like one of those question with a really obvious answer, but I'll ask it anyway When I'm playing, I tend to hit the middle pickup with my pick. It doesn't affect my playing but it doesn't do pickup surrounds much good. I play a Jackson PS-1 and a couple of Strats and they're all the same. The Jackson is now 12 years old and the pickup cover is a mess ! To be honest I only noticed recently because of the amount of chips and dents in the plastic. As I only use the middle pickup very rarely I adjust the height as far into the body as it will go i.e. flush, to keep it out the way, but it suggests I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas? GEdwardJones
It's just something you've got to get used to. A lot of people adjust their middle pickups all the way down for that reason (I did for years and years, also because the pickup was so far from the strings I could just flick to the middle to get a clean sound with a distorted amp). For me, when I go from playing a guitar with two pickups to one with three the trick is to remember to pick just a hair closer to the bridge. It might take a little practice, but after a while it becomes second nature.
GregP
I never got used to a middle pickup. When I had a strat-style guitar, I did exactly as mentioned above, and put the danged thing right down flush with the pickguard. Also as mentioned, you can still use it, though! I actually found that the guitar became MORE versatile. Now I use a tele-style or a dual P-90 guitar. No middle pickup. Greg
Robert Irizarry
Same problem here. The middle pickup just happens to sit just about where a sound hole on an acoustic would be which is about where I've been told I should be. Yeah, its not an ideal placement so you're not alone. I like the suggestion of cranking it down lower - you can still use it if you like and you don't have to go through the trouble of hacking your guitar to get rid of it. If and when I start my first project though, there will be no middle pickup.
Mickguard
On my Rocket 350 the middle pickup is disconnected and kept low-- because the strings are so high, hitting the pickup isn't an issue (as long as it's kept low and disconnected, that is). I haven't noticed this problem with my strat, but I think I end up picking between the middle and bridge pickup, maybe.

I wouldn't feel so bad about making your guitar look used. My brother bought me the a book called "Beatles Gear" for my birthday and it arrived today. One of the first pictures I saw when I opened it up was a picture of George Harrison's SG from the recording of the Revolver album. The pick up cover at the bridge is beat to hell. So you're in good company

Maurits
This is exactly the reason why Ritchie Blackmore's sig. strat has no middle pick-up. He kept hitting his, thus screwing it all the way down like you have done.
