pokpok
im at the point in my project where i will be attaching the neck to the body... iirc the distance from the zerofret to the 12th fret..must be equal to the 12thfret onto the saddles... what my question is...which saddle should i measue it from? im using a ibanez edge type bridge if that helps any thanks in advance
PatientZero
look in the fret scale calculator under "Free Information" at stewmac. They give you the distance from the nut to the post nearest to the high E. not sure if its going to work out with an edge type, but you're closer. At any rate, I THINK you measure to the saddle for the high E at mid adjustment.
Devon Headen
Put the high e about 3/4-7/8 of the way foward in its travel. Measure to that saddle from the 12th for placement, and you'll have plenty of room for compensation.
GregP
The high 'E' can even be all the way forward if you want, since no string will ever need to be shorter than the scale length. Greg
thedoctor
GregP, where where you the last time I put a new bridge on? It is so simple, as you said, and I got the last two too short. Try to hide that on a Gibson.
Devon Headen
But there could be a very slight discrepancy in your measurements. It gives you a little wiggle room. Then again on a TOM you need all the compensation room you can get.
GregP
Measure twice, drill once. (watch me eat those words when I screw up my own TOM installation) Greg
Devon Headen
Usually I measure bridge position 4 or 5 times, but even being off 1/16" with the high E all the way foward could really mess things up.
thedoctor
Honestly, the more you think about it the worse your chances of getting it right are! GregP has it right on! From now on, do it to the high E and drill them bastards. I never would have had to do a messy refitted bridge if I had done just that!
