Marzocchi705
Ive started my first project, a custom desing based on a SG. Its body is Ash with a Mahogany strip down the center. Im building my own neck out of maple and will get either a rosewood or maple presloted fretboard. I dont know what finish i want yet so sugestions are very welcome. The body blank glued up http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/mar.../inksonswid.jpg The template i made http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/mar...stemplatesg.jpg What do you guys think? PLUCKyou
looks sweet...i like the mahogany strip....there's something about the contrasting woods that appeals to me more than paint...keep up the good work and i'd definately go with some sort of oil or laquer or clear or w/e ...no paint please lol Edited February 10, 2005 by PLUCKyou
Marzocchi705
Thanks, i love the contrasts in the wood. I think it may just be a sealer then clear coat job this one. Maby rosewood fretboard is the way to go with this on, what you think? Im routing it out on wednesday when i get back to the woodshop. Im having two humbuckes (dont know what brand but probibly mightmite as there cheap) and a one volume one tone 3 way toggle setup.
deadmike
ooo gibson SG my fav the template looks a bit more like a ESP Viper. cant wait to see more updates!
Marzocchi705
Its based on thoes two guitars, the SG shape i find doesnt work for me and the viper is slightly better, my one is smaller than both so it works for me. Next update will be Wednesday. I'll get some High-res pics with the schools cam, i took thoes one's with my mobile.
Maiden69
Remember to fill the grain before using sealer, or you will have to use a lot of sealer to fill it up with contless hours of sanding. I like to use epoxy, but you can use water based grain sealer from Stew Mac, you can dye it to whatever color you like, or just leave it clear. I have filled both Ash and mahogany with black epoxy and it looks killer. Just and idea, this is the back of my guitar with black filled mahogany and this is the front of my other guitar, this is ash with 2 mahogany strips running down the sides, once I sanded it looked great. Marzocchi705
Damn, i knew i missed somthing out. That last pic looks killer maiden, i think i will use black epoxy, is that used as a filler? If i do that it might look cool with a sort of cherry burst? Red to natural, im just going to wipe on any dye i use so it shouldnt be too hard to do.
Maiden69
Yes it will, but if you are doing a cherryburst and the colors are lighter make sure that you sand back to expose the maximum ash as possible to make it brighter. Here is a pic of the finished guitar link
Marzocchi705
OMG, thats beautiful I havent decided what colours im going to do it in, i estemate im about 1 month and a half till im ready to finish it. I only get to work on it 3 hours a week im doing it for my woodshop final. That 1.5 months for the body only, maby a little after thats done theneck wil be done too. Its going to be a bolt on cause i orderd too thin a blank for a set neck.

Marzocchi705
Ive done all of my bevels and done my tummy cut now. Will have pics soon. Im getting the rest of the wood in for my neck and im going to try puting in LED fret markers, ive seen a tut on here for side markers and i assume its similar to puting them in as fret markers but i was wondering if anyone here as doneit and has pics or knows of a site with a guide on it. Help is much apreciated.
Marzocchi705
Ive routed out all my pickup cavitys and control cavitys, im going to rout out the resess for a TOM bridge. Ive decided on the TOM as i like it on my Les Paul so i want it on this aswell, it has no neck angle so it needs resessed. A pic of me holding my mates semi-complete Bass. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/mar.../Photo-0024.jpg Theres somthing up with my computer and it wont let me upload pictures from my phone, so i'll have to sort that out soon causei really want to show you my work so far. xlr8
That looks like an 'angry' SG to me - looking forward to seeing this one progress.
Marzocchi705
Angry? Cool... Btw the neck is from a strat copy i had lying around so im using it for dimensions, my only other guitar is a set neck Epi LP. By the end of the week i will be ready to put on my colour, i think bloodred stain with a black burst round the edges, mirord on the back to show of the mahogany as much as posible. I'll start my neck then too. I think i'l have a flame maple fretboard on this because ive never had a guitar with one and its only £1 morre than a plain one. Digideus
OOo a nice rhodes. thats the main infulence for my taste in guitars but to be honest, all the stock RRs ive played suck... Except one, and that was a USA custom model that cost about £4000. How far did you recess the TOM bridge? Im considering it for my project HERE. Anyway keep us updated on the G1 & G2. Marzocchi705
im just doing it trial and error, as it stands its 2mm down but my fretboard is going to be higher that normal so it balaces out, i can take more wood out but i cant put back it in. this guitar is very much a trial and error thing and as im only aloud to use hand tools. I wish my bluetooth was working so i could upload more pics. This guitar is going to be nothing 'special' but itl look fine and work fine so im gona be happy with it. Just wait untill i have my own bandsaw...

Marzocchi705
Thanks man! It is very viper-ish but its not an exact copy, i dont like the way they feel, this ones smaller and more contoured. Purfect for my small stature. Did i mention that im only 15? I figure if i work at it i'll be as good as some of the people on here when im 35 (LGM springs to mind, rhodes too) There work is amazing and it was the inspiration i needed for this, without this forum i would not be where i am today, so thanks guys!
